The Travel

From Denver, flights are going from $400-$600 on Frontier, with a discount new flight expected soon. Other carriers service also to both Liberia & San Jose
From Colorado Springs, flights are going from $500-$600, with Continental being primary
You can fly into either Liberia or San Jose, and if you choose San Jose, you’ll need to plan for some further driving, rental cars are set up at both airports

The Car Rental

Our man is Rigo, the manager of POAS Liberia car rental. He speaks great english (rgonzalez@poasrentacar.com) and his cell is (Costa Rica) 506-849 4657. The www site is (also Poas Rental Car but they also use another company name):

For groups of 4 or more (+ gear) I suggest a large 4x4 like the Galloper or full size Suzuki. If it is 2 people, maybe 3, then get a Dihatsu Terios. The Suzuki Jimmys are rough, but an option. The roads can be ridiculously poor at times, so 4x4 is recommended.

A final discount is being set up now, stay tuned for details. Cars can be rented from both Liberia & San Jose airports.

The Traveling Tips

(More to follow soon on our new LavaDos website!)

About 80 during the day and 55 at night. Come prepared for anything, lots of sun, lots of rain.

Internet: Access at hotels, or in town or my brother’s house if necessary.

Phones: As far as telco goes around here, we have GPS cell phone coverage on the ICE network. You can roam from T-mobile I think at like $2/minute. Maybe others too. Purchase a $10 phone card in the airport when you arrive before you go through customs with your luggage. The card will come in handy for local and calls to the USA At the house, we also use Skype if you need it and have wireless net around the property at 128k/128k over satellite. Not the best but functional. Now you should not need a computer down here cuz we have access if you need it. Just so you know...

Money: Travelers Cheques are a pain, no one takes them and they cost money to cash. Bring US dollars and your ATM and credit card. Many ATM cards will work just fine and you can take colones straight out of the machine. You can use your credit card many but not all places. They take US $$ or colones anywhere.

Bugs and stuff... there are some. For example, the Mano De Piedra (Neotropical Jumping Viper) is the most common venomous snake but you may also find Coral snakes. Don't sweat it. Just make sure you bring some type of closed toe hiking shoe preferably boot to wear whenever you are in the grass or dark. At a minimum, they will stop the fire ants (yeah, they have those too) and other noseeums, sand flies, etc. Bug repellent is key.

This is it, the eruption… LavaDos… are you in? lava@grassitup.com
